ChatGPT's New Lightweight Deep Research: Faster & More Accessible
OpenAI has launched a new, more efficient version of its ChatGPT deep research tool. This "lightweight" version is now available for ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro users, with free users gaining access shortly.
This streamlined research feature uses a version of OpenAI's o4-mini model. While responses are generally shorter, OpenAI assures users that the depth and quality remain consistent with the original deep research tool.
This lighter version addresses usage limits by being less resource-intensive. When the original deep research limits are reached, queries automatically switch to the lightweight version, ensuring uninterrupted research capabilities.
The lightweight version of deep research is powered by a version of OpenAI o4-mini and is nearly as intelligent as the deep research people already know and love, while being significantly cheaper to serve.
Responses will typically be shorter while maintaining the depth and quality.

Increased Competition in AI Research Tools
The launch comes amidst a surge in deep research tools within the chatbot landscape. Competitors like Google's Gemini, Microsoft's Copilot, and xAI's Grok also offer similar functionalities, all powered by advanced reasoning AI models.
These models are designed for enhanced problem-solving and fact-checking, crucial components for conducting thorough research. OpenAI plans to extend the lightweight deep research feature to Enterprise and educational users next week, with usage levels matching those of Team users.
