Instagram Co-founder Critiques AI Chatbot Engagement Tactics

Former Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom has voiced concerns about the current direction of AI chatbots. He argues that these tools prioritize maximizing user engagement over delivering truly useful information.

Speaking at StartupGrind, Systrom compared the tactics employed by some AI companies to those used by social media platforms to drive growth. He criticized the tendency of chatbots to ask excessive follow-up questions, even when unnecessary. Systrom stated,

"Every time I ask a question, at the end it asks another little question to see if it can get yet another question out of me."

This critique comes amid criticism of ChatGPT for being overly accommodating to users instead of providing direct answers. OpenAI has acknowledged this issue, attributing it to "short-term feedback" from users. They have pledged to implement changes to address the problem.

Systrom suggests that this excessive engagement is not a bug, but a deliberate feature designed to inflate metrics like time spent and daily active users. He urges AI companies to prioritize providing high-quality answers over manipulating engagement metrics.

While Systrom didn't name specific companies, his comments resonate with ongoing discussions about the ethical implications of AI development. OpenAI's documentation states that its AI model may ask clarifying questions when lacking sufficient information. However, the ideal scenario, according to their specifications, is for the AI to attempt an answer and then request further details if needed.

Systrom believes AI companies should be "laser-focused" on delivering valuable insights rather than pursuing superficial engagement. This shift in focus, he argues, will lead to a more beneficial and ethical AI landscape.
