Meta's Llama AI Model Downloads Surpass 1.2 Billion

Meta's open-source Llama family of AI models has achieved remarkable growth, exceeding 1.2 billion downloads. This announcement came during the inaugural LlamaCon developer conference. This significant milestone builds upon the previously reported 1 billion downloads in mid-March, which itself was a substantial increase from 650 million in early December 2024.

We have thousands of developers contributing tens of thousands of derivative models being downloaded hundreds of thousands of times a month.

This statement from Meta Chief Product Officer Chris Cox highlights the vibrant community surrounding Llama and its rapid expansion.

Meta AI Reaches One Billion Users

In addition to the impressive download figures, Meta AI, the company's AI assistant powered by Llama models, has reached approximately one billion users. This demonstrates the widespread adoption of Meta's AI technology.

Growing Ecosystem and Competition

While Meta's Llama ecosystem is experiencing rapid growth, the company faces competition from other major players in the AI field. Recently, Alibaba released Qwen 3, a family of AI models that competes directly with Llama on several benchmarks. Despite this competition, Meta's open-source approach and the rapid adoption of Llama signify its growing influence in the AI landscape.
