Pinterest Tackles AI Content Overload
Pinterest is taking action against the proliferation of AI-generated images on its platform. Responding to user complaints, the platform announced new features to improve content quality and user experience.
AI Content Labeling and Control
Pinterest will now label AI-generated and modified images. When viewing an image closeup, users will see an "AI modified" label. This identification system uses image metadata and Pinterest's own classifiers to detect AI content, even without obvious markers. Creators can appeal incorrect labels.
Furthermore, Pinterest is introducing a "see fewer" option for AI-generated content. Initially available for categories like beauty and art, this feature will eventually expand to other areas. Users can select this option in the Pin's three-dot menu to reduce AI content recommendations. This addresses user concerns about AI-generated images overwhelming authentic content.

Addressing User Concerns
The rise of AI-generated content, often referred to as "AI slop," has sparked backlash among Pinterest users. Many feel it diminishes the platform's value and drowns out authentic user-generated content. Platforms reliant on user contributions and social sharing are particularly vulnerable to this issue.
User complaints on platforms like Reddit and articles across various media outlets have highlighted the negative impact of AI-generated images on Pinterest. Concerns include the prevalence of low-quality AI content in browsing, search results, and board suggestions.
Pinterest's Commitment to Quality Content
Pinterest plans to introduce more AI-related tools in the coming months. The company believes generative AI can be a positive force when implemented thoughtfully. CTO Matt Madrigal stated:
"As people encounter AI-generated content on Pinterest, we are empowering our users to make more informed choices about the content they see. Gen AI content on Pinterest should enhance users’ ability to discover and act on their inspiration, and we are intentionally approaching this new landscape in a thoughtful way that benefits everyone on Pinterest."
Pinterest's new features aim to balance the potential of generative AI with the need to maintain platform quality and address user concerns about AI-generated content overload.
