YouTube Experiments with AI-Powered Search Clips
Google is bringing its AI search overview technology to YouTube, testing a new way to discover content through AI-powered video clips within search results.
This new feature, currently being rolled out to a small number of US YouTube Premium members for English search queries, presents a carousel of short video clips related to the user's search.
We’re experimenting with a new video results carousel that appears after entering certain search queries. This new feature will use AI to highlight clips from videos that will be most helpful for your search query, providing another way to discover content when searching on YouTube as well as discover topics and information related to your search query.
Instead of a full AI-generated text summary, YouTube will display a series of clips likely relevant to the search. This is expected to be particularly useful for product research (e.g., "best noise canceling headphones") or location-based searches (e.g., "museums to visit in San Francisco").
This is most likely to show when you search for more information about products you’re shopping for (such as “best noise canceling headphones”), or when you search for more information about locations or things to do in those locations (such as “museums to visit in San Francisco”).
While this approach doesn't seem drastically different from current YouTube search results and integrated ads, it aims to improve content discovery by using contextual signals from the search query rather than relying solely on keyword matching.
Although a small-scale test for now, this AI-powered clip carousel could prove valuable in enhancing video discovery on the platform. It offers a new way to explore a wider range of content based on the nuances of user searches.
This feature is currently limited to a small group of YouTube Premium users in the US and is being tested with English search queries. It will be interesting to see how this AI-driven approach evolves and impacts the future of YouTube search.
