YouTube Pilots Affordable Two-Person Premium Plan
YouTube is testing a new, more affordable Premium plan for two users in select regions. The pilot program is currently running in India, France, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
“We’re experimenting with new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a two-person Premium plan option in some countries, allowing two people to share a subscription at a reduced cost,” a YouTube spokesperson told TechCrunch.
Similar to Spotify Duo, this new plan allows two people living together to share a Premium subscription at a lower price. This offers a compelling option for users who want Premium benefits like ad-free viewing and background play without the cost of a family plan.
Boosting Subscribers and Revenue
This strategy could help YouTube increase subscriber numbers and revenue. It may attract users who previously canceled Premium due to price increases in recent years.
This two-person plan is the latest in YouTube's efforts to diversify its subscription options. Earlier this year, YouTube launched Premium Lite, offering ad-free viewing (with some limitations) at a lower price point in select countries.
While YouTube boasts over 125 million combined subscribers (including trials) for Music and Premium, the company has not yet confirmed a broader rollout for this two-person plan.
It remains to be seen if and when this plan will expand to other regions.
