Apple Alerts Users of Government Spyware Attacks

Apple recently notified numerous individuals worldwide about targeted spyware attacks on their iPhones. These attacks are believed to be state-sponsored. At least two individuals, an Italian journalist and a Dutch activist, have publicly confirmed receiving these alerts.

Ciro Pellegrino, a journalist for Fanpage, reported receiving an email and text message from Apple warning him about the spyware. The message indicated that the attacks targeted users in over 100 countries. Dutch activist Eva Vlaardingerbroek also received a similar notification, sharing a screenshot on X (formerly Twitter). The alert emphasized the targeted nature of the attack, suggesting it was related to her work or identity.

Apple's Ongoing Efforts Against Spyware

This isn't the first time Apple has issued such warnings. The company has previously notified users of spyware campaigns and directed them to resources for assistance. Other tech companies like Google and WhatsApp have also alerted users to similar threats.

Apple's alert to Vlaardingerbroek stated, "This attack is likely targeting you specifically because of who you are or what you do. Although it’s never possible to achieve absolute certainty when detecting such attacks, Apple has high confidence in this warning – please take it seriously.”

Vlaardingerbroek believes this was an attempt to intimidate and silence her. Neither Pellegrino nor Vlaardingerbroek have provided further comment to TechCrunch.

Previous Spyware Incidents and Investigations

Earlier this year, Pellegrino's colleague at Fanpage, Francesco Cancellato, received a warning from WhatsApp about a spyware attack. WhatsApp attributed the attack to Paragon Solutions, an Israeli spyware company. Citizen Lab, a digital rights organization, confirmed their investigation into these attacks targeting WhatsApp users. Following this incident, other individuals working for Mediterranea Saving Humans, a non-governmental organization, also reported being targeted by Paragon.

It remains unclear which specific spyware campaign these latest Apple notifications relate to. Apple has not yet commented on the situation. The nature of these attacks highlights the growing threat of government-sponsored spyware and the importance of digital security and privacy.
