Apple Developing Specialized Chips for Smart Glasses, Macs, and AI
Apple is reportedly developing a new generation of chips designed to power its upcoming smart glasses, enhance Mac performance, and boost AI capabilities. According to Bloomberg, these new processors are inspired by the energy-efficient architecture of the Apple Watch chips.
Focus on Smart Glasses to Rival Meta
Apple CEO Tim Cook is determined to compete with Meta in the burgeoning smart glasses market. Meta has sold an estimated 2 million pairs of its Ray-Ban Meta glasses since 2023. Apple is exploring non-AR glasses that utilize cameras and AI to enhance the user experience. One of the chips under development is specifically designed to power these cameras and other components while minimizing battery drain.
Enhanced Macs and AI Servers
In addition to smart glasses, these new chips are also expected to power future Mac computers and AI servers. This suggests Apple is investing heavily in improving performance across its product lines. The company aims to begin mass production of these chips with TSMC by late 2026 or 2027.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that one of the chips is designed for low-power consumption, similar to the Apple Watch processors. This focus on efficiency is crucial for wearable devices like smart glasses.
