Epic Games Launches Webshops to Bypass App Store Fees

Epic Games has announced a new feature for its Epic Games Store, allowing developers to create their own webshops. This move follows a significant legal win against Apple, enabling developers to circumvent app store fees and offer lower prices for in-app purchases.

Epic Games' long-standing legal battle with Apple challenged the 30% fee charged on developer earnings through the iOS App Store. A recent ruling confirmed Apple's violation of a 2021 court order, which prevented Apple from restricting developers from directing customers to external purchasing options.

With the new webshops, developers can offer direct purchases, avoiding Apple and Google's fees. This strategy benefits both developers and players, with developers retaining more revenue and players enjoying potentially lower prices.

Fortnite Returns to iOS App Store

Epic Games is also bringing Fortnite back to the iOS App Store. Players will be encouraged to purchase in-game items directly through Epic's platform for better deals.

Epic Games Store Revenue Share Update

The Epic Games Store typically takes a 12% revenue share, already lower than Apple's. Starting in June, Epic will waive its share for the first $1 million earned annually per game. The 12% revenue share will apply only after a game surpasses $1 million in revenue.

“With new legal rulings in place, developers will be able to send players from games to make digital purchases from webshops on any platform that allows it, including iOS in the European Union and United States,” Epic stated.

This new initiative empowers developers with more control over their revenue and pricing strategies, potentially reshaping the landscape of in-app purchases.
