Freepik Releases Open-Source AI Image Generator Trained on Licensed Data

Freepik, the popular online graphic design platform, has launched F Lite, a new open-source AI image generator. This model stands out because it's trained exclusively on commercially licensed, safe-for-work images.

Developed in partnership with AI startup Fal.ai, F Lite boasts around 10 billion parameters. The model was trained using 64 Nvidia H100 GPUs over two months, utilizing Freepik's internal dataset of approximately 80 million licensed images.

Two Versions: Standard and Texture

F Lite is available in two versions: standard and texture. The standard version offers predictable results closely aligned with user prompts. The texture version prioritizes creative compositions and richer textures, though it may be more prone to unexpected outputs.

This release positions F Lite among a growing number of generative AI models trained on licensed data, addressing ongoing copyright concerns surrounding AI training data.

We've been working on this for months! Excited to finally share it!

Addressing Copyright Concerns in AI

The use of copyrighted material in training AI models is a subject of ongoing legal battles involving companies like OpenAI and Midjourney. Freepik's approach of training F Lite on licensed data offers a potential solution to these concerns.

System Requirements

While open-source, running F Lite requires significant computing power, needing a GPU with at least 24GB of VRAM.

Growing Trend of Licensed Data for AI

Freepik joins companies like Adobe, Bria, Getty Images, Moonvalley, and Shutterstock in developing media-generating models trained on licensed data. The outcome of current AI copyright lawsuits will significantly impact this growing market.
