Pinterest Rolls Out AI Content Labels

Pinterest has officially launched AI-generated content labels after a testing period. This initiative aims to increase transparency and address the growing influx of AI-generated content on the platform.

These labels help users identify AI-modified images. When viewing an image close-up, users will see an "AI modified" label in the bottom left corner. Pinterest uses image metadata and detection classifiers to identify AI content, even without obvious markers.

Now, when users click on an image Pin in close-up, they will see an “AI modified” label in the bottom left-hand corner. To do this, we not only analyze an image’s metadata, but also develop classifiers that automatically detect Gen AI content, even if the content doesn’t have obvious markers.

This approach goes beyond self-reporting, proactively identifying and tagging potentially AI-generated or modified content. Pinterest's detection relies on the IPTC Photo Metadata Standard, which includes information about image editing processes and tools.

Combating AI Spam and Improving User Experience

Pinterest acknowledges that its system isn't perfect and has implemented an appeals process for incorrect labeling.

As we refine these classifiers, our labels will become even more helpful and accurate. However, we know that these systems aren’t perfect. This is why we set up an appeals system for creators and users who believe that their content may be mislabeled.

This update is crucial for combating the rise of AI-generated spam and low-quality content on the platform. To further enhance user control, Pinterest is testing a "see fewer" option for AI-generated Pins in categories like beauty and art. This feature will allow users to reduce the amount of AI-generated content in their feeds.

We will soon launch an experiment allowing users to select a “see fewer” option on Gen AI Pins for certain categories that are prone to AI modification or generation, such as beauty and art, and will continue expanding into more areas.

This "see fewer" option will be available in the three-dot overflow menu on each Pin, providing users with more control over their Pinterest experience.

These additions represent significant steps towards improving user trust and maintaining the quality of content on Pinterest. The effectiveness of these changes will depend on the accuracy and prominence of the AI-generated tags.
