Uber and WeRide Expand Robotaxi Partnership to 15 Cities

Uber and Chinese autonomous vehicle company WeRide are significantly expanding their robotaxi collaboration. They plan to bring their self-driving taxi service to 15 additional cities over the next five years. This announcement comes just five months after the successful launch of their robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi.

The expansion will focus on cities outside of China and the United States, broadening the reach of their autonomous vehicle technology. The partnership leverages WeRide's self-driving expertise and Uber's ride-hailing platform. Similar to Uber's collaboration with Waymo, WeRide provides the autonomous vehicle technology while Uber manages network routing and fleet operations.

Currently, the two companies operate in Abu Dhabi, partnering with local company Tawasul Transport for fleet operations, and have announced plans to expand into Dubai.

This expansion builds on Uber's growing portfolio of partnerships in the autonomous vehicle space. Over the past two years, Uber has established over 15 partnerships with various companies focusing on ride-hailing, delivery, and trucking. Recent collaborations include deals with May Mobility, Volkswagen, and Momenta.

Uber's most prominent U.S. partnership is with Waymo, offering a "Waymo on Uber" service in Austin, Texas, with plans to launch in Atlanta soon.
