Chat Haus: A Cardboard Commentary on AI's Impact
In Brooklyn's Greenpoint neighborhood, a unique "coworking space" resides between a school and a library. Called the Chat Haus, this exhibit by artist Nim Ben-Reuven features cardboard robots mimicking a typical office scene. But there's a twist: these robots represent AI chatbots, humorously highlighting their growing presence in creative fields.
Ben-Reuven created the Chat Haus to express his concerns about AI's impact on his work as a graphic designer and videographer. He's already experiencing job displacement firsthand, losing freelance opportunities to AI tools.

It was an expression of frustration through humor. I didn't want to become bitter about the industry changing so rapidly. I decided to fight back with something silly I could laugh at.
The exhibit's lighthearted tone makes it accessible to a wider audience, regardless of their views on AI. Ben-Reuven wanted to avoid negativity, believing it limits the message and forces defensiveness. The Chat Haus attracted diverse onlookers, from millennials taking photos to elementary school children asking questions.
AI's Impact: A Lighter Take on a Serious Issue
While acknowledging AI's disruption in creative industries, Ben-Reuven maintains perspective. He recognizes that compared to global conflicts and other traumas, the impact on his field feels less severe.
The cardboard medium itself adds another layer of meaning. Ben-Reuven, who has used cardboard in his art for years, sees it as a metaphor for AI's perceived fragility in the creative world.
Cardboard's impermanence, its ability to collapse under pressure, reflects how I feel AI interacts with creative industries. AI-generated images might look impressive on social media, but with scrutiny, they lack substance. Like cardboard, they can easily fall apart.
The Chat Haus is a temporary installation, displayed in a building awaiting renovation permits. Ben-Reuven hopes to extend the exhibit and potentially move it to a larger gallery. He envisions expanding the installation but faces the practical challenge of storing the materials.
