TikTok Enhances Accessibility Features

TikTok has launched new accessibility features to create a more inclusive experience for all users. These updates focus on improving visual accessibility and readability.

AI-Generated ALT Text for Images

TikTok now uses AI to generate alternative text (ALT text) for images. This technology automatically describes images for users with screen readers, enabling them to understand visual content through audio descriptions. This builds upon TikTok's recently introduced manual ALT text feature, offering a convenient alternative for creators. This feature makes the platform more accessible for people with visual impairments, similar to Instagram's implementation since 2018.

High-Contrast Mode and Bold Text Support

A new high-contrast mode increases the color contrast of text, icons, and interface elements. This improves visibility for users with low vision or contrast sensitivity. Users can enable this feature in the accessibility settings.

TikTok also now supports device-level bold text settings. When a user enables bold text on their device, the app will automatically display all in-app text in bold, enhancing readability.

TikTok's Commitment to Inclusivity

“We know that when people feel seen, heard, and supported, they’re empowered to share their stories, create and connect with others in meaningful ways,” stated TikTok in a blog post. “That’s why we’re focused on continuously building products that serve everyone. We see accessibility not just as a responsibility, but as an opportunity to innovate and foster a more inclusive platform for our global community.”

These new features complement TikTok's existing accessibility tools, including:

  • Auto-generated captions for videos
  • Dark mode
  • Text-to-speech
  • Adjustable text size

These updates demonstrate TikTok's ongoing commitment to building a more inclusive and accessible platform for its diverse global community.
